Is anyone actually n the market to upgrade their DSLR ?

i'm certianly not in the market for a body upgrade at all but just wondering...assuming that a d300, (or d3x for the more wealthy among us), is announced and it lives up to expectations...is anyone actually in the market to upgrade ?

the canon forum is swept up in upgrade fever with the 40D, (and no wonder with all those crappy rebel owners lol ). i know alot of the canon guys i shoot with are upgrading to the new 40D or 1Ds and the nikon guys are waiting with baited breath for the d3x; but no one here seems to have indicated any desire at all to upgrade their body.

    just out of curiosity...

I Have always said that the next body I buy will be a D200 class (rather than D80) so I guess the D300 will probably be the go when it's time to part with the readies.
Lets hope it takes SD + CF (Hate CF and if the body only uses it then IMO it's a backward step) otherwise I'll have to get some CF to SD converters before I purchase.
In case you haven't figured it out yet IF the purchase happens I will definitely not be anywhere near the head of the queue.

I've been in a holding pattern now for about eight months now. My original choice was a D200, but I suspected that both Canon and Nikon would be releasing new cameras this year. So I decided way back when to see how all this played out. At the time the S3 was really enough for my needs and my clients were happy with the results. Basically I used it for web and some fine art experiments.

On a personal preference level the S3 fell short in a couple of key areas:
    1) Shutter speed
    2) Focus
    3) Low light
    4) Viewfinder
    5) Consistancy

And number five spelled the the begining of the end for my S3. I had never seen a D40 and while reviewing the specs it was pretty close in size to the S3, so a light bulb went off in my head. I could kill three birds with one stone with the D40 I could semi-retire my S3, build my glass collection, and be patient as to the selection of a second body. If a D300 is released and has no significant advances over the D200, I pick up a D200 at a great price with the difference having gone into some glass. On the other hand if the D300 is all that! I gain a great camera. I saw it as a win win situation. If a D3 is released we'll have to go back to the drawing board on that one and see what we come up with. In the meantime the D40 is holding it's own.

I am not in the market for an upgrade. I am no longer in the market for a new lens either. Being a student and living on my own is a bit too expensive.

I will keep my D50 until it breaks. When it does, I will probably get a D200 class camera. By the time that that happens, it will probably be the D400 or D500 .

I reckon at least a kilo and a half plus the Pro lenses to go with it.

I am definitely on the hunt for a D200 or whatever replaces it.

I was just about to pop out the money for a D200 body when two things happened:

    1. D200 bodies got quite scarce

    2. The rumor mill fired up about the D200 replacement.

I do a LOT of night sports shooting, so the possibility that the "New D200" would have better high-iso performance is enough to get me to wait. I'm getting by with my D50 for now, but with the prep school year getting underway I can't wait long.

If and when the "New D200" is announced, I will probably be one of the first to call in an order.
