My advice - find the option that allows you to change the limit from a maximum of 1MB filesize to a dimension limit - that way you can upload higher quality images, and they'll automatically be resized if you can't be bothered to do it in photoshop, making them more suitable to be posted on the forums.

I prefer the 1mb limit. I keep all of my images under that size anyway, and it lets me upload pictures without a size (dimensions) limitation.

It all depends on use really. Even resized to within the pixel dimension limits my images are usually over a megabyte, so that option just seems impractical to me.

I save in Photoshop with a quality of 10. There is no visual difference after 10 unless you put your face to the monitor to spot the details. It cuts the file size down considerably.

I save all my pictures in PNG for the final copy, so I can't use Jpeg compression.

I resize slightly (and subsequently compress) the 3-6 mb jpg with Ember from Firehand.com to just under a gig. This allows viewing at the thumbnail, 4x6-ish and essentially full-size with decent quality if desired. It is not my archive, but a casual gallery :-)
