    S1 IS zoom?

Hey J/w but what is the lens for the S1 IS? I know its a 10X but what would that translate to for a DSLR lens? Thanks!

10x by itself is meaningless...it only has meaning relative to the lesser number...

Specifically, the lens on the S1 is 38-380mm (35mm equiv.).

Just in case JTL's accurate but short reply did not fully explain it...

Zoom is ability to change the focal length of the lens - not the magnification, which is what many new users think.

The "X" is just a measure of the range of the focal length of the lens - the larger "telephoto" number divided by the shorter "wide" focal length.

So, you can have a 6mm - 72mm lens like the S3 for a 12X zoom. Or whatever the S1 has for a 10X zoom. In the case of DSLR, the numbers are bigger but the concept is the same. A "standard" zoom lens that comes with most DSLRs is 18-55mm or so - just about a 3X lens. However, you can get a 50-200mm zoom with a 4X range, or an 18-250mm for about a 13X range, or a 200-400mm zoom for a 2X range.

So yes, X is essentially meaningless with DSLRs :-) But an 18-250mm is about the same ratio AND magnification as your S1.
