lol yeah i know what happens with that, I have a 5 month old.
I just want to know how to do that for my family photos.

switch, meter off the eyes and use good glass.

Im still new at this, what does metering mean and how do i do it?

I think he means that you should set your desired exposure for the eyes. If your camera does spot metering this is easier.

Switch, you may need to read the manual 
Even the manual for my Sony A200 (when I had it) covered this.
