Which Nikon lens? 70-300G or DX 55-200

Hi I'm new to this forum and new to my Nikon D50w/kit lens. I'm thinking of getting an affordable telephoto lens and wonder if anyone has any opinions on either of these 2 lenses or any 3rd lens?

    AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55mm f3.5-5.6G ED or Nikon AF 70-300mm f4-5.6G

    Any response would be appreciated.

I would stay away from the 70-300 AF-G lens, and go with the Sigma 70-300 APO instead.

Since you already have the 18-55 DX (your kit lens), and I think you meant the 55-200 DX. Seems to be an ok lens for $250, but I would probably opt for the Sigma 70-300 APO for about $220 just for the better reach.

That said, you might want to go with a single lens like the Sigma 18-200, which is easily as good as the others and replaces a 2 lens system for about $400. Granted it won't reach as far as the 70-300, but should cover 90% of your shooting needs. You could always add the 70-300 if the need arrises as it is relatively inexpensive. Or, you could add a 1.4X or 2.0X teleconverter to your bag.

    Ha! See, I can change...

    Question Teleconverters

That brings up a good question. Do you have any teleconverter recommendations? I've been wondering about (down the road) when I'll want more than my Sigma 18-200 can give. I haven't seen much about teleconverters on the sites I've been combing for lens reviews...of course maybe just haven't looked in the right places.

After some searching on the web I can't find specific info about using the sigma teleconverters with the 18-200 lens...such as does it retain AF features or become MF (would be annoying).

    Thanks!

sigma 18-200 - is it good?

I read your answer on the nikon 55-200 and your recommendations on the Sigma 18-200. Is this Sigma lens fast on autofoucs and is the image reasonably sharp at the telephoto end?
    Thanks
