I bought my 1st digital camera today , Canon A85 , after reading
many reviews here , so please excuse my lack of knowledge .
Can I remove the compactflash card when its full of pics from
my camera & safely process that compactflash card into my PC
after a week or two ? I'll be travelling in Europe .Is the Compactflash card volatile ?
Thank you , Robbie

Flash memory is not considered volatile. Data retention is measured in years. That doesn't mean it's perfect, so it's always a good idea to download to multiple sources (hard drive and CD/DVD) as soon as possible.

Many of us carry 4 or 5 (or more) medium to high capacity CF/SD/MS/xD/SM flash cards, take a ton of pictures and then download to a PC or Laptop via a card reader, when we can. Normal care (for electronics) while outside of the camera should ensure many years of reliable use.

I concur. However, they are easy to lose or misplace. So having an extra one or two on hand can be handy. Plus, you'll find you take more shots that you can dream of simply because "you can", especially with a few extra flash-cards in your pocket.
