The digital camera is giving this message and the card is empty. The card is not locked manually. Others cards work fine in the camera so it isn't the camera. Is this a fixable problem or do I just need to purchase a new card?

How do you know the card is empty??

If you are saying this because the camera doesn't think there are pictures, you could be completely wrong. The card could be full of other files, pictures the camera doesn't recognize or non-picture files. Its also possible that the card's formatting (directory structure, ...) is corrupt.

I would suggest mounting the card in a card reader and seeing if the desktop computer can see any files. If there are files you want to keep, move them to a folder on your hard drive. I would then suggest reformatting it on the PC as FAT (DO NOT opt for FAT32) and then remounting it in the camera and reformatting it again. If you have no concern for any data that might be on the card, you could simply try reformatting it in the camera, bypassing the PC and card reader.
