Luckily this did not happen to my canon but my old fuji S6000. I use it for video snipits of the kids sports. But hadn't used it for a very long time.
Last night my daughter was learning a new dive and wanted a video so I brought it.
The lens cap was jammed onto the lens. Couldn't get it off. I don't know if it was dropped at some point or got banged around in the bag.
Today I finally got the filter off but while unscrewing it I could hear lots of broken glass sounds....
luckily only the fiter was broken. Lens was ok...

Always have a filter on my lenses, at the very least it makes cleaning the lens much easier. Always use a good quality filter though.

Never been a fan of filters myself but I never go anywhere without a hood.

I love pro and anti filter threads. It's like watching pro and anti bike helmet discussions in the cycling community :)

Glad it all worked out cheaply for you Spinning.
