I just found the sequence of button presses to get the shutter count reading on my E510 - I was just curious to see how much I'd used it but was staggered to see it read 10,055 actuations  I just couldn't believe how many shots I'd taken with many less in relative terms seen as "keepers". It just goes to show how easy it is to fire of loads of shots to get a few that you like. Now I'm wondering if I should be worried about shutter wear.

My E-410 has nearly 20,000! I'm not too concerned, they are supposed to be conservatively estimated at 45,000 or something. By then you'll be looking for your upgrade to ypur upgrade!

I am always amused by how many I take. I bought my E520 about 13 months ago and it is at 10,764. From my previous E series cameras that seems only a little on the high side of normal for me. As you said Phil, I am also somewhat disappointed by the keeper ratio. Of course, I am certainly glad I never tried that rate with my trusty Canon AE-1. At around $15 for film and developing that would have run $4350! It really makes a 12-18 month camera refresh seem pretty cheap.

Ok thats good so it sounds like I can wait a bit longer to upgrade then as I've not had the E510 quite 2 years yet. Mind you I do regret missing the after Christmas deal at Jessops here in the UK. I could have got an E620 for 399 including the mail in offer from Oly of a free grip & battery. I was just two slow & hadn't really been thinking all that seriously of upgrading.
kgosden you're right about the old film days thank goodness for digital.
