Hi, I finally bought a camera, a 5d, I shoot mainly family photos, ie birthdays, family holidays, school events and basketball. I want to try landscape also.
I was thinking of the canon 35mm f2? Has anyone used it and if is any good for what I shoot? With my ae-1 p I mostly used my 50mm and even with my zoom, I always seemed to zoom to 50 without realizing it.
I can't wait to start using my camera, all I need now is the lens. :)

35 f2 is known to be a decent lens. You get what you pay for, and it isn't the sharpest lens in the world in the corners on FF, and uses an older slower/louder AF system, but for the price, it is one of the best deals in Canon's lineup. Very good image quality for a sub $1000 lens. If you wanted a cheapish high quality addition, the 85/1.8 for less than $400 is known to be very good as well, and uses a the better USM focusing.

My first vote for an all around lens for the 5D is the 24-105 f/4L IS. Great image quality, range, and IS. Will run you around $1000.

Either way, enjoy.

Thank you for your reply Jason. I also was thinking of the 85mm and the 50mm. I will have to save for the 24-105, $1700, for that lens.:(
I will have to try them out. A lot of stores don't let you try them before you buy. Also I've rang a number of stores and they seem to out of stock of many canon items, they told me canons is slow on replenishing their stock.

any pics taken recently with the 85? think we would love to see them

this is the most recent one i shot with mine on the 5d mark II. using autofocus with an outter focus point. i believe at f/2, exif should be in tact if you wanna check it.

Thank you everyone for your replies. Dennis and Adam, wow, that lens is great, (the person taking the pic makes a difference to!)

What do you think of this set up?

35mm f2, 85mm 1.8, 100 2.8 macro and 580 exII flash.
I won't get them at the same time, can't afford it.:( I want to save for an L lens, but will I need it? say the, 24-105mm?

All the stores I've rang are out of stock of all items I asked for, I put my order in for the 35mm, but I have not put a deposit on it yet.

Again, thank you all for your help. :)

I think you should get at least one zoom lens, a 24-105 sounds fine, something you can leave on your camera.

I take this is the mark1 5d? It gets pretty dusty in there if you are always switching lenses... and getting a full-frame sensor is more expensive then a cropped one :(

Advice, is always point the camera Down, while switching lenses, it really makes a difference.

Thanks you for your advise Csae, yes it is the 5d mk1, the mark 11 was way to expensive. I bought it from eBay, it looks brand new, the owner looked after it well, 1500 shots taken with it. He had the 24-105 but sold it on its own.
I was thinking of getting the 35mm and flash for the moment, and then the 85mm and last the L lens.:)

Hi Rooz, I see if I can manage the 24-105, have to see what my husbands thinks about it, he encouraged me on the 5d.
He had enough of me always talking about photography and which camera to get, I think he did not care how much as long as it kept me quiet.:p
If I get the L, will I stll need the flash?

35mm f2, 85mm 1.8, 100 2.8 macro and 580 exII flash.

Have you considered buying used? I've purchased all of my lenses used on POTN or FM. You'll save 15-20% or more.
The 35 f/2 is a decent lens optically, but expect soft corners unless stopped down, but most often when I 'm shooting at wide aperatures I care mostly about the center anyways.
The 100 macro is a great lens. I have the Sigma 105 f/2.8 macro which I love for macro as well as portraits, etc.
Also, for a "walk-around" zoom if you don't want to spend the money on the 24-105 consider cheaper alternatives, such as the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 and the Sigma 24-60 f/2.8 and Sigma 24-70 f/2.8.

Michael, I like how the eyes are beautifully sharp. Will I be able to get family group photos with that lens? I was also looking at the sigma, 24-70 f/2.8. and the sigma 50mm 1.4. My husband said get what ever you like, but I would feel guilty spending to much on photography gear.
I've looked into buying 2nd hand lens, but they are hard to find. I found 1, the 24-105mm on ebay, it was at $950 yesterday. I think it has 1 day to go.

.
For photos of multiple people you will probably want something a bit wider than 85mm. For group shot I usually use a zoom like the 24-105.

The Sigma 24-60 f/2.8 is reported to be a better lens than the 24-70, but its harder to find. Used copies usually go for under $300 in the US, which is an incredible deal.

POTN and FM both have Buy and Sell forums. You need to register on the POTN forum to see the buy/sell forums...

FM (Fred Miranda) probably has the most activity of any of the Buy/Sell forums....

KEH also sells used equipment...I bought my Sigma 105 macro from them actually....

Buy lenses on Ebay with caution, only from sellers with lots of positive feedback and even then you should be cautious with high ticket items.

Thank you everyone for your advice, I finally bought a lens, it was a really hard decision for me. I did not win the 24-105 on ebay, it sold for $1260.
I could not decide between the sigma and canon, but ended up with the canon 50mm 1.4 , bought from p.o.t.n. for $450. The 50mm is the focal length I shoot the most at. Hope I don't regret it.:(
Going to pick it up on Tuesday. :)
I will also try to get the 580 exii flash also.

$450 seems pretty high. Most online stores have it for 399 and b&h has it for 325 (out of stock tho). Most of the ones that have it for that are out of stock. I found a store in calif that has it for 325. I jumped on that and got it yesterday. I've heard rumors that canon will introduce a new model soon which is why so many stores are out of stock.

Thanks Jason, I know that it sounds high, but even at $325 that works out at $442.23 in Australian dollars, then there is shipping on top. Here in
Australia it cost $599, on line. :(

I already told the seller that I would buy the lens, who knows when the new one is coming out, and I don't have any lenses at the moment. If it is a lot better, I might sell mine and get the new one.:)

Ahh, I didn't realize you were in Australia and about the conversion factor. Makes much more sense now! :)
