had a photoshoot sunday and took a ton of candids in between with the 85 f/1.8 on the 40d.

the shoot was of the dude, not the hot purple haired girl...she was the makeup artist.

all shot with the 85 f/1.8. all shot natural light except the third one. all were candid except the third one too.

anyway, here goes.

1. ISO 100 f/2 1/640s

2. ISO 100 f/2 1/320s

3. ISO 100 f/4 1/200s....shot with cybersyncs and vagabond battery pack firing two 600w/s strobes. used sun over his left shoulder, one flash over his right, and one in front with a beauty dish on it.

4. ISO 100 f/2 1/200s

5. ISO 100 f/2 1/640s

6. ISO 100 f/2 1/200s

Great stuff Adam. That 85 1.8 is an amazing lens. I love the natural lighting in these, works really well here. The only shot that I don't like is the strobe shot.

is it the lighting, edit, makeup, or composition?

The 85mm f/1.8 is my favorite lens. It's just hard to use indoors, but is a fantastic outdoor lens on a 1.6 crop body capturing moments just like you're showing.

it's perfect for candids, it's so small you just don't expect it to have the reach it has. i still haven't got used to that, i'll get ready to take a shot, put the camera up to my eye, and then have to step back because i'm too close.

Nice shots! I'll reserve any specific comments until I look at them on a calibrated monitor.

I had a feeling you would love the size.

hey nick are they too bright on your monitor? i might need to recalibrate mine, they look great on it, but i wonder if they're darker on here than others. i've looked on some friends' laptops and they seem really bright a lot of the time...which is usually the case with laptops anyway, but it's been a while so i probably need to anyway.

really tempts me to sell the 70-200 and 30d and get the 135L and a 50d

i'm also extremely tempted to not get the 135L and get the 5d II.

Yeah they look a little bright... but I'm using a monitor that I use for wheel alignments right now... ;)

so when you edit your wheel alignments they come out too dark huh?

yea, i dunno man, mine's calibrated, but lately they've seemed brighter than normal on regular computers..especially my gf's macbook.

Great work Adam,

Any reflectors on the natural light shots?

nope not at all. just backlit by the sun. they were all candids except the one with makeup. i just got myself in position so the light would look nice and fired away.

So yup they look a bit bright here at home. Nice work though. I like that chick's shirt.

I just recalibrated my monitor last night. I didn't notice they were too bright. Maybe just a touch after searching for it but I don't think they're too bright.

i shoot to the right mostly so they're gonna be a little bright anyway. i find that b&w's are usually better when about a stop or so over than shooting regular color..so i shoot anywhere from right on to a stop over....plus i shoot 100% manual so it happens a lot. i like a little blown highlights. i actually had to bring the last one down about a half stop and it's still pretty bright..so it might just be my taste. at some point i'll recalibrate though.

I like the lighting and the comp. I don't know jack about makeup. ;)

They all look very bright to me, but it works with this lighting; I wouldn't darken them any.

That MU artist is HOT!

And I love the shot with the strobes. Love the way you posed it, lit it, and processed it.
