I currently have a Nikon 18-200mm VR lens which I love. But would not be against owning 2 lenses to split up the focal distance with a 2.8 or better f-stop. Does anyone have any experience with this lens? I could pick up a good VR af-s shorter range as well, maybe even a 50 1.8 on top of those for the same price as my 18-200vr.

Any comments or concerns?

the sigma 70-200/2.8 HSM and tammy 70-200/2.8 are generally regarded as the best alternatives to the nikkor 70-200/2.8VR.

And from my research, the Tamron is optically excellent, as good as Canon/Nikon, however the focus motor is slow, noisy, and often misses. The Sigma has HSM (USM/AFS) focusing but has optical issues. Pick your poison...

How about the Nikkor 80-200mm f2.8 AF-D for about $920 USD? Still $700 less than the 70-200/2.8 VR.
