Rookie trying to display photos on 52" HDTV, via Nikon Video Cable. Is set to NTSC --- very poor quality, even the though set has 1080 dpi. Am I missing something/setting? D40 didn't come with the cable, so I ordered one... have been told need to burn on disc from computer first and then display. Kinda makes the cable a waste of money. Any suggestions appreciated.

The cable appears to be optional - http://dcresource.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod.php?masterid=771689
Anyway, keep in mind that composite cables can't display the kind of fidelity that component and HDMI cables can at those resolutions. You are probably seeing a little fuzziness from the analog connection, which is normal.
Does the D40 have HDMI output? If so, that's what you need, an HDMI cable so you can display at higher resolutions for your monitor.

no its Nikon's proprietary cable: miniplug to camera and RCA type plug into standard video/audio jack on TV. Regardless I don't think the camera would drive HDMI anyway.
Thanks for the thought though.

Sure it could, we're just talking 1920x1080 at most.
