I tried this lens out the other day, man was it nice. In the dim shop I only needed to bump my camera to ISO 400 and fiddle with the smooth focus ring a little until my focus indicator light came on. At f/1.8 I could get speeds of 1/320 sec. in that kind of lighting, quite amazing to me. But is this lens a real purple fringing monster? Here's a couple of crops from pictures I snapped:

That's kind of horrendous. Now granted, it was bright light and the rest of the place was as I said pretty dim, but is this something I'm going to run into a lot using a large aperture like that? Or is it a little more specific to this lens?

I think the purple fringing is more to do with the copy of the lens, some will be better, some will be worse. From my experience with it, I've never seen it quite that bad. Here's a 100% crop.

I've rented 2 different 85 1.8's for that same reason. They both ended up having extreme issues with purple fringing. I definitely won't be purchasing one of those. My 28-70 has none of those issues with even better image quality.

Classic96, have you used the 85mm 1.4 and does it suffer with the same issue? tia

I have one that appears to not suffer from that. There shoudn't be 1 out of 5 or whatever, that will have puple fringing. QC should be much better that that...especially for a Japanese made Nikon lens.

I went through my 50/1.8 gallery (link below) and I don't think that the $110 Fitty fringes like that particular copy of the 85/1.8.

Get the Fitty.
