On Sigma’s website have a list of all the cameras that HSM works with. The D200 is not one of them. Then I Googled D200 and HSM and all I got were hits about an old issue where the HSM made the D200 not auto focus at all. From the looks of it this has been resolved. I have a Sigma 70-200 with HSM and it does auto focus, but is it the camera or the motor in the lens that is doing the work?

The D200 has it's own in built focus motor but as I understand it when the lens has HSM or in Nikons case AF-S then the electronics detect that and the lenses own motor does the focussing.

Sigma HSM lenses have the motor in the lens, like Nikkor AF-S lenses. The D200 is compatible with HSM lenses. You may have seen an article written when the D200 was very new. There may have been a slight incompatibility that Sigma later resolved, and if you buy an old, used HSM lens, you may have an issue where you need to get it rechipped, but all new lenses should work fine.
