So I turn on the SB-800 and it sounds like the batteries are dead, wich they are not, wait about a minute, flash is still not ready, remove batteries and almost burn myself on them they are so freakin hot.

anybody know what's going on?

The batteries are probably stuffed. In the first instance I would try new batteries (Sanyo Eneloops are the best IMO). If it fries another set there is something wrong with the internal circuitry of the flash and it will need to be checked by Nikon.

The batteries do get hot but they should not get any more than very warm.

No these batteries were scary hot!!

It's the second time I borrow this flash from another department at work (they never use it) and both times the same thing happened.

I've had a similar problem with a wall charger for an mp3 player. When it didn't make a proper connection, the thing would get so hot it would try to melt itself. When it did connect properly and my Zen recognized it and started charging, it would only get warm. Something isn't making the right connection.

ok thanks I'll make sure all the connections are clean and tight.
