View Full Version : What - no Nikon fireworks photos?!

Well, despite all my well-documented anxiety over getting my dslr wet, sandy and/or salty... I lugged my D70 and new tripod out to the beach at my house to try and catch some fireworks. We got their late (were at a friend's bbq until about 9pm) so didn't make it out for the 'big-ones.' No matter - my 3-year old thoroughly enjoyed it - so it's all good!

Anyway, it started to rain about 20 minutes after we got out there, so not only did I miss the good stuff, but I missed pretty much everything! I managed to squeeze off a few shots while I played with optimal shutter speeds (OBTW - I would have KILLED for a small - or any - flashlight). I wasted a lot of time setting up... and my brand-spanking-new 'professional' (yeah right) tripod fell victim to the sand (the handle fell off, and I can't reattach it - must have lost a piece in the sand - again, that flashlight would have been great.

I'm happy (very happy) to report that the D70 was completely soaked by rain and covered in sand, but works just fine today (although I can hear some sand in the lens when I zoom)!! So - you guys were right. I should quit whining and worrying about stuff and just SHOOT! OBTW - my Oly 330 is now up for sale. I've decided to stick with Nikon for good, and the Oly never felt 'right' like the D70 did/does and it blew a lot of WB exposures on my last outing.

Anyway - here are a couple of pics from last night (our Independence day here in the U.S. - I know there are a lot of folks from other places on this forum). They're cropped (obviously). I'll post more if I can clean them up a bit (BTW - 30 seconds is WAY too long of an exposure for constant fireworks!).

Comments, critique, criticism, suggestions: ARE ALL VERY WELCOME!!!

Let's see some of your fireworks shots!!!

I think most of them are posted in the Pic of the Day thread. The first one was a 4 second exposure, the 2nd was a 2.5-sec exposure, both f/5.6, white balance set to direct sunlight. PP black was added to darken the sky a bit, sharpened.

There is also a "sticky" thread in the Gallery as well.

Anyway, here is one of my photos from last night.
