I've been reading all the specs on the SB 900.. what exactly do they mean by rotates horizontally 180 to right and left.

I assume that you can turn the flash head either 180 degrees to the left or 180 degrees to the right but you cannot rotate it through a full 360 degrees in one movement.

correct. VR pointed this out a while ago. his wish was answered.
the sb800/ 600 rotate 180deg one way and only 90 in the other.

So this lense would be an option as opposed to buying a bracket. I basically need to be able to use the flash while the camera is in portrait orientation. With backside of flash facing me and pointed directly up 45 degrees.

If you mean having the flash shoot towards the subject whilst pointing up at 45 degrees then you can do that with an SB-600 or SB-800 already regardless of whether you are shutter release up or shutter release down in your portrait orientation.

That is exactly right you can turn the head a full 180 in either direction, but I'm guessing it won't go all the way around. I will tell you from personal experience I wish my 800's and 600 would do that. I use them as slaves and with the sensor on one side of the body, more than once it has been a challenge to position the unit where it could see the the controlling unit. If you never use it off camera, it's not an issue. I want to be able to use them off camera with Nikon's system because of the ability to handle power settings on the fly from the camera. I could buy a pocket wizzard and several receivers, which I would like to have but they are still out of my price range, I'm still adding lights. And the really cheap radio units don't give you that control. So the full 180 swing both ways is a very nice feature for me. But I'm sorry they dropped the 5th battery, I really like the recycle time of my 800's I guess I should just buy quantums, turbo batteries and pocket wizzards then I'll be happy. Not really, there will always be something else, lol.

Joe McNally has a mini review on the SB900.

The part where the gels has a computer chip in it is amazing.
