I did a search for NB-5L and just came up with it's a good battery.

My question is how long should I charge the battery for the first time. The manual says 2 hours to charge, but how long should it charge for the first charge??

just a follow up, I called canon's technical support. Fast and very nice btw.

Anyway, the guy told me for best first charge to charge for 2 hours, then pop it in camera and take 5-6 shots, then pop the battery in the charger for 1 more hour and it will be 100% charged.

We'll see. I did the first 2 hours, took the pics (which are awesome btw) and now it's charging again.

Will update...

On the nikon battery manual which i read online, i believe that it stated that attempting to charge the battery when it was full would damage it.

I don't see how this is possible seeing as these batteries have circuits that prevent over charging/over discharging.

I wouldn't worry about it too much.

You can always buy some more cheap generic batteries if the original one starts to show diminished performance.

I've got 3 NB-5L's for my SD700. Two of them are generics that cost $11.00 each and work great.
