Really great photos! I think I'll have to get one those. Quick question; can you use the SB600 wirelessly with the D40 or does it have to be attached to the camera? I don't know much about it.

Nice shots! I love my SB-600, especially using it wirelessly. It's about time I got 1 or 2 more I think.

Not without some kind of commander attached to the camera, SB800 flash or SU800 commander.

Great shots! Looks like an awesome show. It's always fun when people are open enough to dance.

Really good shots there, with a good balance of flash and ambient without the flash overpowering everything else. That's something I need to keep working on.

Nice drummer shot and the polaroid photo, well what can I say. ;) I didn't even know they still used Polaroids outside of the "backroom". :D

Not without some kind of commander attached to the camera, SB800 flash or SU800 commander. Can the D70 do this without purchasing an 'extra' commander (like a SB-800)? Like the OP, I'm looking at getting a flash, and want something that can grow with me. I'd like to save a few $$ by getting the SB-600 instead of SB-800, with the goal of buying more 'remote' units (SB-600s?) later. Will my D70 be able to 'command' them (SB-600s) without an SB-800 anywhere in the mix?

What would I be giving up (besides flash range) with a SB-600+D70 vs a SB-800+D70? Thanks!

Yes, the D70 (and D70s, of course) can command the SB-600 wirelessly, without an 800. With an SB-800 on top of the camera, you can command the 600 and have the 800 contribute to the exposure. The D70's built-in flash can only command, and not contribute to the exposure. :)

Looks like Jason answered your question.
The SB800 has the extra battery(5th) holder for faster recharge, diffuser and filters come with it and the obvious more powerful.

All true... Just wanted to add that the D70/s will control one "group" of flashes. This means it will control however many remote flashes are programmed to listen to the same channel that the D70 will control. This is only limiting once you get to the point where you want more / less output from different remote flash heads. The D80 will control 2 groups I believe... Can't remember what the D200 / D300 will do, but The SB-800 can control more groups, as can the SU800..

Of course if you are that serious, you will have done enough homework that you likely won't be asking many questions around here. :D
