Its going to be a while before I will be able to get a SB flash so in the mean time Im trying to think of ways to defuse the onboard flash for better results. So far the only thing i can think of is to maybe cover it with some sort of white material. Tried sheets of paper but that killed too much flash even when I turned the power up. Any ideas? I realize any solution would probably qualify as being ghetto rigged but i dont mind. :D

Try baking paper from the Supermarket - it's translucent.

I was thinking of same thing myself before I got the SB600. I did found this web site.

Since you didn't mind any solution, you may wish to check it out. I never got the courage to try it. I was afraid of accidentally scratching the hotshoe contacts.

Hmm.. Not expecting excellent results but I fell it can be better then this. Ill keep experimenting.

not a bad result for a teabag ! certianly much better than without anything. i'm sure there are better ways to do it but not for the lack of cost and effort it takes to empty a bag of tea. you can thank coldy for that tip.

btw...where's the blue eyes reggie ? :D

I am certain that with enough force you can de-fuse the onboard flash... :D

Sorry... You meant diffuse... I knew that... just thought we could use some humor today and in my visual mind, I pictured someone de-fusing his flash with a hammer.

I know there was already humor here....

Have you tried the old classic ping pong ball trick? Cut open one end of a ping pong ball with a hole roughly the size of the top corner of your flash. Stuff the ball onto the flash. Enjoy.

I might try using a bit of orange highlighter on the inside front surface of the ball to warm up the flash and/or attempt to match incandescent lighting for WB.

Could I use a tennis ball instead for some creative lighting effects?:)

Reggie have a look at this thread in the Nikon D50 Users group on Flickr.

Not sure whether this link will work but here is a diffuser made from a plastic milk carton.

Be very careful when defusing the onboard flash. Whatever you do, don't cut the red, oh wait, I mean blue wire... :D

(sorry, couldn't resist)
