I noticed that in Manual mode with my D50 there is no exposure compensation, the aperture is adjusted instead(when pressing +/1 and turning dial).

Is this how the exposure compensation works in the other modes ?
ie changing the exposure compensation opens/closes the aperture ?

There is no exposure compensation in Manual mode because in that mode you have complete control over both the shutter speed and the aperture size. Compensation only works in Aperture Priority and Shutter Priority (not sure about Program Mode) because you can only control one out of the 2 and the camera has to guess the other setting. But when it guesses its not 100% accurate. If it underexposes you set the compensation to a +/x value and vise versa until your happy.

Yes, and if you want to adjust the exposure in Manual mode, you can adjust shutter speed as well as aperture. Turning the command dial will adjust shutter speed. I see you already know how to adjust aperture. Keep the ISO in mind as well -- raising it will raise the exposure.
