Hello Everyone,
I just recently purchased a Nikon D40 with a 18-55mm kit lens as well as a Nikkor 70-300mm AF lens. I am new to the DSLR world and would like to learn more. I am really interested in macro photography as well as long distance stuff. What is a good *cheap* macro lens. I don't care if it is auto focus or not. I have heard great things about the nikkor 105mm but it's way out of my price range. I have also heard a lot about the tamron 90mm. Any help would be great.

pretty sure the tamron will not autofocus on our d40's.

do you know about the auto focus limiations us d40 users are faced with?

I know that we can only use certain lenses but what limitations?

Only two macro lenses offer AF on the D40. On othr DSLRs the list is a lot bigger.

1. Nikon 105mm f2.8 VR
2. Sigma 150mm f2.8

But, since you are of the opinion that you can get by fine with just MF on your macro lens, there are other options:
Cheap but very good optically:
Sigma 50mm f2.8 macro

Bit more expensive, very good optically too:
Nikon 60mm f2.8 micro

A bit longer, again very good optically:
Sigma 70mm f2.8 macro

Still a bit longer, again great optics:
Tamron 90mm f2.8 macro

Also good, and in the 100mm macro class:
Sigma 105mm f2.8 macro
Tokina 100mm f2.8 macro

There you have it, a whole list of macro lenses that are relativily affordable, but do not offer auto focus on the D40.

nikkor lens' must be AF-S and sigma lens' must be HSM.

It might also be worth taking a look at the Raynox DCR-250, Macro-Scan 2.5x Super Macro Conversion Lens (http://www.adorama.com/IRXDCR250.html?searchinfo=raynox%202.5x&item_no=2).
