For a day to day use, casual pictures, majority being outside. Which one will be better the A570IS or SD1000? I have read reviews of both and looks like they are good.

I know this are 2 different models, but are the ones available at local stores down here in Puerto Rico. The other models available is the A560 and SD630.

Thanks!

The A-series has manual controls, the SD-series does not. You'll be able to take better shots with the A570 if you are willing to spend a little time learning how to use the features. In the SD-series I think the SD800 is the best option but you might not be able to find that.

Are you expecting to just use Auto mode all the time?

Most of the time I will be using Auto. Once thing that got my attention about the A570IS was the manual controls. I have no idea how to use it right now but I'm willing to learn. I also like the AA batteries, since I'm upgrading from a Sony DSC-P72 I have the rechargeable batteries already. As for the SD800 I have not seen it down here.

Can you say that the A570IS a good purchase?

Thanks!

The A570IS a good purchase. It has IS and 4x zoom but the SD1000 doesn't.

I agree; I don't think you'll go wrong with that camera.

Hi Albertro,

I have, and have had, a number of cameras and I'm extremely happy to have found the A570IS while shopping for a second camera. I was looking for something inexpensive to throw into the backpack every other day and started by looking at the a460 but wasn't happy with it. So I edged up to the $300 range (CDN) and found the A570IS. I also compared it to the SD1000 and other higher priced ones.

My wife and I wanted more than anything to have a useful optical viewfinder and the SD1000 was quite a bit smaller and sketchier than the 570. That would have clinched it right there but we also prefer the AA batteries*, lower price, anti-shake, and manual controls. The 570 seems like a great camera for the price and so far the pictures are great!

One last thing that convinced us is that the 570 doesn't look as fancy and probably won't attract much criminal attention. We like that a lot too.

cheers,
Rob

* We found the AA Sanyo Eneloops seem like the perfect camera battery. See an indepenent review at http://www.stefanv.com/electronics/sanyo_eneloop.html
