View Full Version : Swivel LCD Camera

Basically on my search i ended up with G6 and S3 IS. The 2 cameras seem to be on par with each other. Fast lens vs IS, both have RAW and have the same wide angle. How does this 2 cameras differ?

Its quite hard to find G6 nowadays though and they sell almost the same as S3 IS at second hand.

Is there anymore candidates for a camera that has swivel screen besides this two? I just think that the Swivel LCD's thing would be so useful.

How about this cameras:

Konica Minolta DiMAGE A200
Nikon Coolpix 5400
Nikon Coolpix 8400
Olympus C-8080 Wide Zoom
Olympus C-7070 Wide Zoom

(i know some of them are really old though)

The S3 doesn't produce RAW.

oh, thats one advantage for G6 then. but isnt there a hack firmware that allowa S3 IS to use RAW?

The G6 only zooms to 140mm equivalent, compared to the S3's 432mm, so if you want long telephoto shots of wildlife or sports, you might miss that reach.

If you want a hinged (up and down only, not the swing out sideways) LCD with RAW and a longish (300mm equiv) zoom, you might want to look at the Fuji S9100 / 9600 - it doesn't have IS, but might be slightly better for high ISO, enabling faster shutter speeds.

I think all the cameras you listed, while good, haven't been available for years - Konica Minolta don't even exist any more, having been taken over by Sony.

It might help if you could post your answers to the questionaire, so we have some idea of your needs - apologies if you already have, I don't get to read the site every day.

Edit: Oops, I originally had typed "FujiS6100", which a) doesn't exist (yet) and b) might have been read as "Fuji S6000", which doesn't have the hinged display. Of course, I meant "Fuji S9100 / S9600" - corrected now.

Yes there is, but is that what you want to do?

Just did a bit more pondering, and decided that portability is a more important factor for me. I like the idea of having a camera everywhere with me, as I dont think I use my SLR often enough because of logistics problems.

Now i am thinking of getting an A640 or a G6. Is the price and a bit more portability a good compromise for the RAW feature of G6? How do the IQ of them compare?

I did tried to grab G6 a couple of times but cant seem to get one at a reasonable price. Its proving harder to get one. Seems like the release of G7 made people see G6 in a whole different light.
