Would like your advise on new purchase. I've narrowed it down to these two. Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3 or Canon Powershot SD800 IS. Both look to be good performers, but which is better?

Image quality wise, I think the SD800 IS is the better camera by far, because of Panasonic's sensors and their smudging noise reduction.
Also, the SD800 IS is smaller.

But of course, the TZ3 offers a bigger zoom range. So if more zoom range is more important to you than image quality, the TZ3 would be better.

Here's one (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_post.asp?method=sidebyside&cameras=canon_sd800is%2Cpanasonic_dmctz3&show=all) from dpreview (easier to link to for me). You can see that both cameras are rated at 28mm; however, the TZ3's 28mm is applicable over all 3 of its available aspect ratios, 4:3 (like the Canon's), 3:2, and 16:9, which is a really good creative aspect ratio, many have found. And the TZ3 shows lower barrel distortion at the low end as well, so all your architectural straight lines come out pretty straight, not curvy.

On the long end, the TZ3's 280mm is quite a bit more reach than that of the SD800's 105mm, and also its lens is about 1/2 f-stop faster at the long end (f4.9 vs. f5.8)

So the SD800 has an optical viewfinder, the TZ3 doesn't, but you won't find optical viewfinders on long-zoom P&S cameras, only EVFs (like the Canon S3 or Panasonic FZ8, for example).

So which one is better? Here's my TZ3 Gallery... (http://john-reed.smugmug.com/gallery/2762845) You can see that I've been enjoying the little marvel. Which one you choose depends on your needs.
