View Full Version : rainbow halo around lights

Hi there. Almost EVERY time I shoot a night shot with a light (moon or otherwise) in it, I get this weird rainbow halo around the light. Sometimes it is not a a rainbow, but I was wondering if the rainbow is caused by the same thing as a regular halo is. I've also tried taking off my polarizer (which is almost always on, but not always in effect!), but the few times that I've tried doing that, nothing was different. Has anyone else had this problem? Any ideas to fix it? Thanks!

Make sure the lens is clean

If you still have the problem, post some examples.

Hi Dooder and the rest of the members,
I have the exact same problem that Dooder described. I have a Canon Digital Rebel with a 28-55 mm lens that comes as part of the kit. I do not see the halos when I use my other lens, a Tamron 50-200 mm. I had once contacted Canon regarding this problem, but they said that the lens was definitely not defective.

Let me know if you want me to post some example photos with halos around bright objects. Does anybody know why this is happening?

Thanks for any help.

I had the same effect from the moon ... 18-55 mm Nikkor, at 18 mm, 30 seconds, F/4.5, ISO 200, "Shade" white balance.
This is a 100% crop of the original, unprocessed shot.

When I brighten the photo, then the colors really jump out. They're not too bad in the original.

Here's a link to one of my photos with a halo around light sources:

Wow, yours are much brighter, more colorful than mine. They are such perfect rainbows, that I would be tempted to photo them on purpose! Do you have any filters, or anything else in front of 28-55 lens? What was the aperture and shutter speed? I don't know what is causing it, but if you provide that information, someone else might be able to help.

Here's more information about that photo with the halos:
Exposure: 0.077 sec (1/13)
Aperture: f/5.6
Focal Length: 55 mm
ISO Speed: 800
