I'm looking to get my first DSLR and I've been offered a new (though probably sat in the shop for ages) D70 with 24-85 lens for ~560. Considering a new D70s with the 18-70 lens is currently going for ~750 this sounds like a good deal.

Does anyone have any thoughts? Whats the 24-85 lens like compared to the 18-70 - will I miss much in wide angle shots? How does the D70 compare to the D70s? I've heard that there may be a firmware upgrade to give the D70 similar features to the D70s. Is this true and if so, is it free?

Later,
Abaddon.

The firmware update is free, it will give the same menu as the D70s. It will not give the same change in image characteristics, and also will not give he larger LCD ;)

The D70 and D70s are pretty much the same. The firmware update for the D70 puts them on a pretty even footing. I think there was a minor improvement made to the AF tracking system, and of course the D70s has a larger LCD.

Just out of curiousity, which Nikkor 24-85 lens? There is an f/3.5-4.5 AF-S and f/2.8-4D. Both are pretty good and as you would expect the f/2.8-4 is the more expensive of the two, but I liked the slightly faster/quieter focus of the f/3.5-4.5D.

Either way the lens normally adds $360 (AF-S) to $550 (f/2.8-4D), so it sounds like a good deal.
