I've bought the Nikon D50 yesterday at Costco and to my surprise, it came with the EN-EL3a battery!
The box has a huge tag with a receiving date of 10/10/05. So, my guess is that new D50's now all come with this batter, as I doubt it is a Costco exclusive deal.

BTW, I've tried the Olympus E-500 and the focus was horrible (hard to focus, blurry pics...). Thanks to Costco great return policy, I got the D50 instead and so far I am extremely impressed by well, the whole package (great professional feel and handling). I did want the E-500 for all the features, its dust buster, and its LCD, so it may be possible that mine was defective, who knows...Or it could be that 5-point autofocus does really make a big difference as opposed to a 3-point...

As far as I am aware the EL3a has replaced the EL3 so it's logical that it will find it's way into out of the box camera's.
