Olympus Japan: CCD service advisory

Yet another service advisory - this time from the Japanese website of Olympus Corp. - now brings the number of companies having announced plans to repair digital cameras that have failing image sensors to seven.

Olympus' advisory covers just two models - the Camedia C-5050 Zoom and Camedia C-730 Ultra Zoom. Including these cameras, the seven companies to have issued advisories for almost sixty different still camera models, plus a number of other products including camcorders and PDAs.

Olympus' service advisory - not yet available in the English language - describes the problem in much the same way as other companies have done. The LCD display and/or electronic viewfinder will either be completely dark, or will show various shades of purple and grey, etc.

Unlike other companies, Olympus Japan is apparently adopting a staggered approach, presumably either to soften the blow on its service department, or to procure the necessary parts. Owners of C-5050 Zoom cameras should be able to get them repaired immediately, but owners of failed C-730 Ultra Zoom cameras in Japan will have to wait until the middle of November to send their cameras in. A five business day turnaround to have the camera on its way back to the customer is predicted, and customers who've already had to pay for cameras to be repaired for this problem are advised to contact Olympus Japan.

Should further advisories for other Olympus markets come to our attention, you'll find the information on our news page.
