View Full Version : Advice for Zoom Lens for D70

Hi all. I am new to world of DSLR's and have been happy with my 1.5 month old D70. I currently have the 18-70mm kit lens and I am looking for at three lenses for more zoom. Wildlife would be a primary use for the lens, but other uses as well. The purchase is for my wife as she is the avid photographer, but I am getting into it as well. The lenses I am looking at are below.

Sigma Zoom Telephoto 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO Zoom Macro Super II Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF-D

Nikon Zoom Telephoto AF Zoom Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6D ED

Nikon Zoom AF-S DX 55 - 200 mm F4.0 - F5.6G ED

I have read reviews for the first two lenses and although I would like to go Nikon , the Sigma seem to get better reviews. The Nikon 55-200mm lens intrigues me the most. I am wondering if buying less zoom gets me more lens. Not much info on this lens when I look on the internet. I would *prefer* to stay below $300.00

Any input is always appreciated.

I just got the Sigma 70-300mm on E-Bay at a bargain price, and it is a great lens. It is much better than the 55-200mm which I also tied. In addition it doubles a a Macro Lens as well. Just my $0.02 worth. It is very sharp with lot of nice contrast. here is a sample photo.

I arrived at the same fork-in-the-road when trying to decide which $300 zoom lens to purchase. Like you, I preferred to to keep my equipt "all Nikon all the time," but in researching the choices, I found that Sigmas kept popping up in the data - particularly in a head-to-head comparison to Nikon 70-300mm ED. I chose the Sigma 70-300mm (red ring), though in the $300 price range, we 're only talking about nuance of difference, rather than night and day. When I'm able (and talented enough) to step up to the next level, I expect to be playing in the $1400-1700 price range (Nikon 70-200mm VR). BTW, I found the Sigma online for $219, which left me enough for a decent circular polarizer.

I have the Tamron AF70-300mm f/4-5.6 LD 1:2 Macro which I believe is probably similar to the Sigma. I have been quite happy with it. Here are a few shots.

300mm at f/8.0 2/1000 sec

210mm at f/5.0 2/1000 sec

85mm at f/4.5 2/1000 sec

The exif data says that the last 2 photos were taken 6 seconds apart from each other. I believe that I got this for a little under $200 locally.

I've got the Sigma 70-300mm too. Produces good results, especially for the price.
