Later this week, look for our review of the Canon EOS-D30 Professional digital camera. This one is awesome!

What's next after that? Here's the schedule as it looks right now.
Monday, November 13 - Olympus C-2100 Ultra Zoom
Monday, November 20 - Fuji FinePix 2400
Monday, December 4 - Fuji FinePix 4900 Zoom
Monday, December 11 - Olympus P-400 photo printer

Before you ask: I don't know when I'm reviewing the Olympus E-10 or E-100. Hopefully soon.

And that brings up another issue: with the holiday shopping season almost upon us, I'm starting to notice an increase in the amount of e-mail I'm getting. Since I'm already a busy guy, and people keep asking the same questions, I urge you to check the FAQ, and use our message boards for help before writing me. While I do read every message, I cannot guarantee that I'll write back to you. Thanks!

Steve's Digicams took a look at the Canon D30, and he loved it just as much as I do.

I've posted the DCRP Review of the Panasonic PV-SD5000 SuperDisk camera. While the camera had promise from reading the box and the specs, it turned out to be a big disappointment. Find out why in the review!

Wednesday, October 25th, 2000

I have updated our PowerShot G1 review, with a note about limitations in aperture and shutter priority modes, as well as a sample movie, and two final sample photos.

I've pretty much finished up the Panasonic PV-SD5000 photo gallery. They wanted the camera back in a week, so I had to rush this one. Look for the review tomorrow.

Agfa is recalling the AC adapters that were sold as an optional accessory to the ePhoto CL30 camera. Apparently the adapter can cause batteries to overheat, leak, and even explode! Agfa will replace the bad adapters free of charge, if you've got one.

PC Magazine has posted a comparison review of nine 3 Mpixel cameras. The winners? The Olympus C-3030Z and Kodak DC4800!

PCPhotoREVIEW has a new camera specification comparison system, as well as new contest where you can win an Olympus C-3000Z!

I'm very pleased to announce the arrival of the DCRP Review of the Canon PowerShot G1! This is a very good 3.3 Megapixel camera with buckets of features for the beginning and enthusiast alike. This is a longer than normal review, due to all the interest in this camera. Enjoy!

I've updated the Canon EOS-D30 gallery with two great night shots (replacing that one not so great one).

Our camera bonanza continues this week with a review of the Panasonic PV-SD5000 coming Thursday!

Sample photos are popping up all over the site! Here's what I've added so far this weekend:

  • Canon EOS-D30 - I am realizing that a great camera can make you a better photographer. This $3,500 Pro camera is incredible in all aspects, including photos. Take a look at many of the photos and you'll see what I mean.

  • Panasonic PV-SD5000 - This SuperDisk-based camera is an improvement over the last one, but the color on some of my photos seem off a bit.

  • Olympus C-2100 Ultra Zoom - Just a few photos here ... check out the shots at the airport to see the power of the 10X optical zoom!

Scroll down for lots of late news from yesterday!

Just when I thought I was going to get a break on reviews for a week, things change dramatically. As you can see above, I now have six cameras to review in the next month. Some of them need to go back really soon, so I'm going to have to hurry.

The Panasonic PV-SD5000 is a SuperDisk-based 3.3 Mpixel camera. I couldn't help but notice that the lens is the same one found on the PowerShot G1, Epson PhotoPC 3000Z, Sony DSC-S70, and I think even some Casio cameras.

The other biggie is the Canon EOS-D30. This is my first Professional SLR digital camera, and I only have two weeks to learn how to use it and review it. So I'm going to enlist some traditional 35mm photographers to help out on this one. Stay tuned for photos and more news on all of these.

As it stands now, here's the review schedule:

Monday, October 23 - Canon PowerShot G1
Thursday, October 26 - Panasonic PV-SD5000
Wednesday, November 1 - Canon EOS-D30
Wednesday, November 8 - Olympus C-2100 Ultra Zoom & P-400 photo printer
Monday, November 13 - Fuji FinePix 2400
Monday, November 20 - Fuji FinePix 4900 Zoom

Sorry if the camera you're interested in is further down the list. Keep in mind that I work on this site in my spare time, so thinks happen a little slower here than on the other sites!

- Jeff

I know this isn't really a digital camera, but when I read about the Kodak ADVANTIX Preview in Newsweek, I had to check it out. This is a camera that uses the APS format film, but with a twist: it has a 1.8" LCD display on the back! When you take a picture, you can see the photo you just took on the LCD. You can tell the film not to print that photo when it's developed, but otherwise, that's about it. The name "Preview" may be a bit misleading, since you can't see anything until after the picture is taken anyway.

Nikon has released version 3.1.1 of their NikonView software. This update adds compatibility for the USB drivers included with Windows ME and provides some minor bug fixes for users of NikonView 1.x/2.x and 3.x for Mac users.

I have returned from Chicago and boy am I tired. I'm going to keep it brief today.

The PowerShot G1 review will be posted Monday. You can preview the gallery now.

It looks like the reviews are going to keep on coming -- I may get a one week break after the G1 review, but they just keep on coming. Some upcoming reviews include: Fuji FinePix 2400 and FinePix 4900 Zoom; Olympus C-2100 Ultra Zoom and P-400 printer; Canon EOS-D30; And who knows what else!

The Fuji FinePix 4900 Zoom is now shipping for $999. This is a SuperCCD based camera which produces 4.3 million pixel images, and it has a 6X optical zoom. Look for our review soon -- you can read some others below.

The guys at the other sites have been just as busy as me (most likely busier <grin>) lately. Here are their latest reviews:

Monday, October 16th, 2000

I've posted the long-awaited DCRP Review of the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P1! I say long-awaited both because of reader interest, and because I had to wait so long to get Sony cameras for review! Enjoy!

I'm off to the Midwest for my real job for a few days... look for the next news update midweek, and the Canon PowerShot G1 review next Monday! You can preview the photo gallery right now.

Wednesday, October 11th, 2000

There's been a lot of buzz on the 'net about why the photos in our PowerShot G1 gallery look so much worse than those seen on Steve's Digicams and DP Review. People have noticed red channel noise, as well as chromatic aberrations (purple fringing) in my photos more than these other ones. I don't have a good answer as to why -- the camera seems to be working fine. My guesses are that the photos were taken with the ISO set to "Auto" -- the other guys have had their best luck at ISO 50. And also, it's been pretty cloudy lately, which may play a part in this. I'm going to shoot a lot more pictures with this camera and we'll see what happens.

Recent DCRP reviews include the Nikon Coolpix 880, Fuji FinePix 40i, and the Fuji FinePix 1300.

HP this week introduced two new cameras, and shipped two others. First, the new:

PhotoSmart 315 (shown at right)

  • 2.1 Mpixel
  • 2.5X digital zoom
  • USB support
  • Includes 8MB CompactFlash card
  • JetSend technology allows for infrared photo printing
  • Mac and PC compatible
  • Now shipping for $299

PhotoSmart 215

  • 1.3 Mpixel
  • 2X digital zoom
  • USB support
  • Includes 4MB CompactFlash card
  • Not sure about Mac compatibility
  • Shipping later this month for $199

HP also announced that their PhotoSmart 912 and 618 cameras are now shipping for $799 and $599 respectively. Both of these cameras use Flashpoint's DigitaOS. I'm trying to get some review units, so stay tuned.

DP Review has a very complete (as usual) review of the Canon EOS-D30 "pro" digital camera.

Imaging Resource has reviews of both the Kodak DC3400 and DC3800.

A-digital-eye also has a look at the DC3800.

Monday, October 9th, 2000

I've got a special double feature for you all today! I've posted the DCRP Reviews of the Fuji FinePix 40i as well as the FinePix 1300! The FinePix 40i is a SuperCCD-based camera which doubles as a portable MP3 player! The FinePix 1300 is a low cost 1.3 Mpixel camera. Up next, the Sony Cybershot DSC-P1!

The PowerShot G1 gallery has been updated yet again with shots from the Blue Angels performance yesterday. A few more Fleet Week photos still to come!

Phew! I'm exhausted from running around taking pictures all weekend! This might be the end of that for a while, as the weather is supposed to turn nasty this week!

Friday, October 6th, 2000

The PowerShot G1 is here at last and was worth the wait. I've already put up some sample photos, taken early today during the Fleet Week festivities here in SF. Look for lots more photos coming this weekend!

The review schedule for this month is shaping up. Here's what it looks like:

Monday, October 9 - Fuji FinePix 1300 (pre-production) and FinePix 40i
Monday, October 16 - Sony Cybershot DSC-P1
Monday, October 23 - Canon PowerShot G1

Hopefully later this month the Fuji FinePix 4900 Zoom, Olympus C-2100 Ultra Zoom, and Panasonic SD5000 will show up for reviews in late October/early November.

Thursday, October 5th, 2000

I've put up a few sample photos from the Sony Cybershot DSC-P1. I don't know when the review will be done -- in the next two weeks for sure since they want it back!

Someone in San Francisco (besides me) is probably enjoying their new PowerShot G1. FedEx delivered it to the wrong place and they're taking their time getting it back. Luckily for all of us, Canon sent out another G1 that I expect tomorrow. FedEx can't screw up twice in a row, can they?

A lot of people have been asking me "when are you going to review the Olympus C-2100 Ultra Zoom?" The truth is, I don't know -- I'm supposed to be getting one but it's not here yet. I'll keep you all up-to-date on upcoming reviews, fear not!

I apologize for the downtime again -- I just got a new computer and have been trying to get it setup. Look for reviews of two Fuji cameras next Monday though!

The first-ever digital photography workshop at sea will be held December 3-10, 2000 aboard Carnival Cruise Lines' Superliner Victory on a cruise through the Eastern Caribbean. The workshop, for both beginners and intermediates, is sponsored by Zing.Com, Kodak, Epson, Adobe, Iomega, and others. Arthur H. Bleich, feature editor of Digital Camera Magazine will be the lead instructor, with other professionals contributing.

Delkin Devices has a bunch of new memory card products of interest. On the CompactFlash front, they've got a 256MB Type I (standard) and a 448MB Type II card (wow!). They also have new eFilm Pocket Card Readers for CompactFlash, SmartMedia, and MultiMediaCards - these are less than 1/2" thick! No word on pricing or availability on these new products.

Monday, October 2nd, 2000

In the first of what will be many reviews this October (can you believe it's October already?!), I've posted the DCRP Review of the Coolpix 880! This is a great 3.3 Megapixel camera with every imaginable feature - sort of a Coolpix 990 but for $200 less. Check it out!

Thanks to everyone who responded to the poll over the last few days. It looks like the Canon PowerShot G1 was chosen as the camera you most want to see a review of. Unfortunately, I've got a number of other cameras that have to go back soon, so those may have to come first, but we'll see!

Don't miss DP Review's look at a pre-production Olympus E-10. I must say my mouth is watering over this one. Phil also posted a full review of the PowerShot G1 today.

Steve's Digicams has a helpful note about using the CompactFlash card to upgrade the firmware on your Coolpix camera.

Steve has also posted a first look at the PowerShot G1 -- it sounds like a winner indeed!
