  Panasonic GH1 gallery posted
I've posted the beginnings of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH1 photo gallery. I've got pictures from the State Capital as well as Chinatown -- look for the Stanford photos in a few days. I don't have much time with the GH1, so look for this review in under a week.
Canon to add manual video controls to EOS-5D Mark II
Due to high demand, Canon will soon release a firmware update that will allow users to adjust the aperture, shutter speed, and ISO while recording videos. I know a lot of folks wanted this, and it's nice to know that Canon listened. A little more detail after the break

Back from the dead with the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX1 review
I'm back, with a review of the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX1, a super zoom camera with quite a few tricks up its sleeve. I apologize a million times for being so slow lately... first I was out of town for a week, and then my hard drive totally failed, taking this review with it, so I had to start it over! Hopefully things are back on track now.

Oh, and I'll try to reshoot the night photos when the fog goes away and they turn the US Bank building is lit up again!

Wednesday update: The night shots have been replaced

Sony introduces three D-SLRs, four lenses and a flash
Sony today announced three new entry-level digital SLRs. The new Alpha DSLR-A230, A330, and A380 replace the A200, A300, and A350, respectively. Some of the new features on these models include smaller and lighter bodies, a more intuitive interface, support for SD/SDHC cards (did I just see a pig fly by?), HDMI output, and new lens and flash options. Here are the highlights for all three of these cameras:

Alpha DSLR-A230 [specs]

  • 10.2 effective Megapixel CCD
  • Alpha (α) lens mount supports both Minolta and Sony lenses, with a 1.5X focal length conversion ratio
  • SteadyShot sensor-shift image stabilization gives you shake reduction on every lens
  • Dust reduction system
  • 2.7" LCD display with 230,400 pixels (does not have live view)
  • Optical viewfinder has 0.83X magnification, 95% coverage
  • 9-point autofocus system
  • Auto and scene modes, plus full manual controls
  • RAW, RAW+JPEG support
  • Continuous shooting at 2.5 frames/second
  • In-camera help system
  • Dual memory card slots: Memory Stick Duo + SD/SDHC
  • HDMI output
  • Uses NP-FH50 lithium-ion battery; 510 shots per charge
  • Ships in July for $550 with an 18 - 55 mm lens, or $750 with 18 - 55 mm and 55 - 200 mm lenses

Alpha DSLR-A330 [specs] - changes:

  • Tilting 2.7" LCD display (230,400 pixels), with a wider range of motion than on previous models
  • Live view and super-fast autofocus thanks to a dedicated sensor in the viewfinder chamber
  • Optical viewfinder is considerably smaller than the A230, with a 0.74X magnification; coverage is the same
  • Continuous shooting rate of 2.5 fps with the viewfinder, and 2.0 fps with live view
  • Same battery life with the viewfinder; live view battery life rated at 230 shots
  • Priced at $650 with the 18-55 and $850 with the 18-55/55-200 combo
  • A special brown-colored model will be available

Alpha DSLR-A380 [specs] - changes:

  • 14.2 effective Megapixel CCD
  • Priced at $850 for the single lens kit, and $1050 for the dual lens kit

Along with those new cameras come several new accessories. Both the F3.5-5.6, 18 - 55 and F4.0-5.6, 55 - 200 mm kit lenses are all new, and they're optimized for APS-C sensors. They both feature a Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM) and extra-low dispersion (ED) elements. These lenses will be available separately for $200 and $230, respectively.

Sony also has two other lenses: a new F1.8, 50 mm portrait lens, and an F2.8, 30 mm macro lens. The 50 mm lens will be available in July for $150. Pricing and availability for the macro lens was not available.

Finally, there's a new external flash with a unique pop-up design. The flash has a guide number of 20 meters, and it has a bounce function for better quality flash photos. It's priced at $130.

  Improvements made to multi-page reviews
I've made a few changes to the multi-page review format that debuted earlier this week. By popular demand, the numeric pager has been switched to a pull-down menu. I've also increased the line spacing, and made a few other minor cosmetic improvements. Suggestions are still welcomed in this thread in our forums.

  Panasonic officially announces DMC-GH1 pricing
Panasonic has officially announced the pricing for the Lumix DMC-GH1 interchangeable lens camera. As expected, the price for the camera plus the new F4.0-5.8, 14 - 140 mm lens will be $1500. As you probably know, the GH1 is capable of recording Full HD video using the AVCHD codec, and the new lens allows for continuous autofocus while you're recording. I should be getting my hands on the camera in about two weeks, so look for photos and a sample movie or two at that time.

  New multi-page review format launched
Our new multi-page review format is finally ready for viewing, and I'd like to get your feedback. As you might have guessed, this change was made to increase the number of ad impressions on the site, which has become necessary in this tough economy.

The first article to use the new format is the Fuji FinePix F200EXR review from last month. Please have a look at the review and post your feedback in this thread in our forums. If you see any major problems (e.g. something's broken) then please e-mail me directly. I am especially interested in feedback about your experiences navigating from page to page. Thanks!

PS -- You can still see the review on one page by clicking on "Printer friendly version" at the top-right of the review page.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH1 gets a price
A recent article in the New York Times has revealed the price of the upcoming Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH1 -- $1500 -- which, I assume, includes the new lens. Ouch.

  A special treat
We're having an unusual early May storm, so my next reviews are on hold pending better weather. While your waiting for those, I thought I'd put together some head-to-head comparisons between a few cameras. These use the test scene that are in every review, so you can compare these against other cameras I've reviewed in the past. I hope you find these useful!
