Default question about canon 50mm lens

I was out shopping and came across a lens I think I want i tried to do some searching but didn't get much of anywhere. the low daown is.

Canon 50mm (this is a fixed lenth. just 50mm) with AF and macro. At his shop it is normally $129, but he will sell it to me for $99 with a free UV filter that is normally $15. These are all brand new in the box at the camera shop.

Is this a good deal for this lens??

If this is the EF50mm f1.8, then you can get it from Norman Camera or B&H Photo for about $69 +shipping (no tax outside of Michigan) so it's really not a really bad deal, but tellling you this is a $129 lens is streching it. The value of using a UV filter is also debatable.

This is unlikely, but this could possible be the mark I version of the lens which is fully worth the $129. How can you tell? Mark I has much better build quality and also has a metal mount. It should also say "made in Japan."

Yes and no. If it's f1.4 then it's a bargain (assuming it's in perfect condition). If it's optically, mechanically or electrically faulty then it's expensive landfill.

If it's f1.8 then you can get it for $70 and the UV filters are $10 so it's a lousy deal.

But honestly, the difference between f1.4 and f1.8 is less than 1 stop. I would not contemplate paying more than the f1.8 costs.

Many moons ago, I wondered about whether I should buy the f1.2, f1.4 or f1.8 50mm Nikkor lens. In the end, I got the f1.8. I didn't miss any shots because it was a whole stop slower than the f1.2.

You might want to read up a little on what f-stops and apertures are. There's a pretty big difference price-wise (and functionality wise) between two lenses with two different apertures. The f/1.8 version suffices for about 90% of people, which I think you fall under.

There is another possibility; maybe it's the EF 50mm 1:2.5 Compact Macro?

If so, this would be a good price.

Now that'd be as likely as finding hairs on the palm of one's hand. If it's that and in good condition, snap it up!

That's what I gathered from reading her post.

I am going to call the camera shop tommorrow when they are open and the guy I talked to is there to find out exactly what lens it is. But it is a brand new canon lens that is flawless, from reputable chain camera store. The lens was very small and compact looking. not big or bulky at all.
