Default Sony W5/W7 vs. Samsung V700

Hi, I'm trying to decide on a digital camera. I had pretty much decided on the Sony DSC-W5 until just a minute ago. I had also considered the W7, but figured that the upgrade in MP wasn't really worth the wait and extra cost.

Anyway, I just realized that Samsung released a new camera--the V700. It looks pretty cool. I'm now trying to decide if the W5 or the V700 is what I really want.

Please give me your thoughts if possible.

Here's my info:
1. I'm a college student, but cost is not an issue
2. Most of my pictures are indoors of people, but I might take some landscape shots on vacations
3. I REALLY like big LCDs on cameras
4. 5MP is probably plenty, but the V700 doesn't have a 5MP version
5. I WILL use the movie mode...the Sony is good, but Samsung is state of the art and has movie stabilization
6. I don't care too much for manual controls, since I mainly use it as a point and shoot camera
7. I would also like to be able to take action shots and ahve them turn out decent
8. I scuba dive, so I like the fact that the Sony has a waterproof housing (not sure if this is a big deal though)
9. I don't really take big prints, but I like having a camera that could do it if need be (like if I got a really good picture and wanted to blow it up)

Any help at all would be much appreciated!

Get the Sony W5. It has better low light focusing (Compared to Samsung at least), has manual controls (You'll need them sooner or later) and the W5 is quite fast so its ready for action shots. I don't know about Samsung but I know that Sony is one of the brands know for digital camera excellence (You could also try the Canon SD500 or Olympus Stylus Verve S)

Thanks, anyone else?

Does anyone know anything about the Samsung? I know quite a bit about the Sony, but nothing about the Samsung.

I think it's wiser to stick to a brand you know about (Even a little) than another brand that you know nothing about. When I was choosing a new camera to buy last fall, I decided that it was going to be either Canon or Sony since I used both brands' cameras before.

The Sony Cybershot W5 and W7 also have full manual controls.

Default lets be realistic

Hey matts22,

as you could probably tell, I'm a salesman from Canon. Reading the replies, it sounds as though ProblemSolver is an agent for Sony, and SusieA is an agent from Samsung. I don't know why agents try to be sneeky and tell you bias information.

Anyways regarding your question, I'd say get a Canon SD500 but then again this would be a bias opinion to you so let me try to help you answer your question.

All I know is that both companies are legit electronic companies. Now whether they make good cameras or not, I couldn't tell you. I'd personally choose Canon...=)....but if it had to be between W5 and V700, I'd go with the newer model which is the V700. W5 came out last year, and it is in the process of be cleared where as the V700 from my knowledge is a pretty recent camera. In terms of functions, speed, spec. there is really not that much difference between Canon, Sony, and Samsung. The only real difference you'll be able to notice between the respected company cameras are the type of colours each company uses. In my opinion, I think Canon cameras give the most natural colour....=)....but others say no. It really depends on you matts22. What's your taste?

well, wish you the best on your choice.
