Lunatics. Tell someone who cares.

Seriously now, do you guys want one for $2800 body only? I know you can shoot without flash but what are you going to do with your SB800? And that takes the fun (or challenges) out of photography... It will be handy for professionals but I'm not a pro. I don't think I will buy one with that price.

There was a time you were luke-warm on the D300, I assume that has changed with more and more info and hands on.

lol rich.

i was always a bit worried about the new AF and metering. it kinda scared me a little that imo the 2 most important things in a camera were "all new". i will have quite a few friends that will be getting d300's and a few d3's aswell early next year so i'll have some time to test them out good and proper.

tim, iso will never replace good lighting and good flash work no matter how good it is...thats strobist 101 young jedi. besides which, given i just invested in an R1 kit, (after only 1 day of testing lol), i don't think i'll be doing away with flash just yet.

Both great shots Rooz. Do you get similar results from the R1 kit as 2 speedlights off camera? Since they're the equivalent of a ringflash do they give that on-camera flash feel? That bug shot looks good to me, pretty easy to tell where the light source is coming from due to the shine on their backs. Did you buy from d-d photographics? I'm hoping to save up enough money for a SB800 by the end of this year and they seem to be the cheapest.

Don't forget that we will have Rich's D300 over here for testing fairly soon. I'm more interested in the lens so I should have the body up to you within 2 or 3 months of it arriving at my place. I guess that will give you a good 6 months with it before he will want it back.

I was wondering why you didn't purchase one sooner with the shots you take. Enjoy.

thanks mate. the main reason i haven;t bought one before is cost. $580AUD is a decent slab of money for something i wasn't able to really test out to see if it works.

fortunately i got to borrow someone's kit for a few hours and it amazed me the freedom and even lighting you get out of it. not to mention the kit itself...i know why it costs that much. its the best quality camera kit i've ever seen. i might put up a separate thread about it when i have some time and show everyone what the kit is like.

I guess I'm pretty much the same way and that is why I am still reluctant to purchase some things online before ever seeing or testing the product. Today, for example I called all over town looking for something in stock because I didn't want to order it "blindly" and without trying it out first.

I have checked out that light kit in the stores locally just because I keep seeing them used on the CSI television shows--I have also ran into a few CSIs but never got to play with the equipment and one is in the local camera club. One of the stores also recently sold one to someone in the dental field.

Looking forward to the bug photos.
