Default Which memory card to buy?

The only reason I recently retired my Canon CE-4 35mm, was because I bought a Nikon L4 Coolpix, and I like it a lot because of the macro feature. HOWEVER...

My only problem with it is, they should have designed it with more memory! I tried buying a memory card for it (you know the drill, a bunch of know-it-all store clerks telling me such and such card is the right one), so of course I did... come to find out, the L4 does not "like" the card and I can't get a refund, so to me, it's hard-earned wages wasted. I am not the kind of person who has oodles of cash to blow on this junk.

Can anyone on this forum PUH-LEEZE tell me the model # of a 1GB memory card, which is compatible with this camera, and costs less than $50? Also, do I have to format the thing every time I fire it up, or is there a way to permanently format it once and for all?

My friend has Nikon L4 and I bought her 1giga Corsair x60 for Christmas.
Recently I have read some internet comments, that this memory is slow. But so far, my friend has no complaints. And she is very happy to have possibility to store over 900 photos on the card
I bought this card for the price corresponding to $18. Now I can see internet store's price: $12 (!).
regards

I bought my fiance' a Nikon L4 for her birthday. Fantastic little camera! I've got a Nikon D70s and Nikon 8800 and the L4 is the only one coming on our honeymoon...

I haven't had a card problem with it. We've got a 512Mb Sandisk that works great. Recently I bought three Impact 1 GB SD cards and they're all working fine. Impact is Wal-Mart's brand and right now they're on sale for $19.95. Try them!
