Wrong section, this is the Nikon DSLR section. There is a Nikon section for these questions.

Or better yet, go to the section that says "What Camera Should I Buy?", because there are people that help people on what camera they should buy, like yourself.

And before you post a question like that, maybe try searching through the Nikon forums or the topic I suggested for similiar threads, because more than often there is someone just like you who has asked the same question, or considered one of the cameras mention. You must also probably read some reviews at dpreview on both camers so you know what YOU are looking for. Many people have different opinions and buy cameras for different purposes, so it is critical that you state exactly what YOU want, because you might get something someone else wants, but you don't want the same.

I'm by far not one of the guru's of this site but I've been learning for a while now and actually have a Nikon L series camera so perhaps I can help.

I'm sure you understand megapixels (MP) as that is where all the marketing hype is right now. But MP is only a fraction of the equation. Quality of the lens, size of the sensor, manual vs auto controls also are very important.

The Nikon S series camera's are very small. They tradeoff some picture quality for their small size. The sensor is small and the zoom is small. But the big benefit is that you can always put the camera in your pocket so hopefully you never miss out on a photo because you didn't want to lug your camera around.

The Nikon L series camera's are a little bigger. Bigger sensor, more zoom, should be a small increase in photo quality. The downside is, unless you are wearing baggy pants (like I do), many people won't be able to fit a L5 in their pants pockets, but it should always fit into a coat pocket with ease (mine fits in pants pockets, bulgy though).

To further illustrate the importance of size, do a google search of a Canon S3 or the Nikon D40 or D50. I believe most of these camera's are 6 MP. Yet they take wonderful pictures and are capable of way more than my 7.2 MP Nikon L5. When you see the size of the camera's (although their not huge), its somewhat apparent what that extra lens size and extra sensor size can do for you.
