Default A New Generation of Canon DSLR's

Canon is working hard on the next generation of DSLR's, all of which are built around DIGIC III. By PMA next year, Canon will refresh the entire range (except the 400D) with new cameras which boast the following standard features.
  • DIGIC III
  • Anti-Dust
  • Lower noise, higher ISO (> 3200), higher dynamic range
So with those bits in mind, the source went on to talk about the upcoming models.

The 30D's sucessor will have the following improvements.
  • Improved sensor as described above. Not the same as the one in the 400D.
  • DIGIC III
  • Still 5 FPS
  • More AF points and faster and more accurate AF.
  • Anti-Dust
  • 1.6X Crop Factor
Obviously, no price range was given since these are prototype products, but you can imagine that the price will be similar ($1299 sounds about right).

Pretty believable stuff. Now we get to the interesting part which is related to the 5D AND is very consistent with the hefty rebates on the 30D and 5D that you will see next month.

The 5D will be partitioned into two models, a lower end model and a higher end model.

The Lower Model would be a repackaged 5D in a smaller 30D-sized body with DIGIC III, Anti-Dust, and improved AF (like the 30D successor). This would sell for less than the 5D goes for currently. If I had to a venture a guess, somewhere in the low $2000's would be about right, or even $1999 if Canon were feeling generous.

The Higher Model would include a new 16 MP sensor like the 1DS Mark II (though not the same), DIGIC III, improved AF like before, and a 5 FPS burst rate rather than 3 FPS. This would sell for a similar price to the current 5D. I would guess that $2999 would be about right.

The source is pretty reliable as he visited Canon Japan to preview these cameras and broke the news on the 400D very accurately. This all sounds pretty plausible, otherwise I wouldn't be reporting it.

Thanks Rex for the info. Yes, this is the 2nd or 3rd I'm hearing about the 5D split. It's very interesting to me because I want to go full frame on my next body. Hope this is true. Question is what do I do between now and the time the cameras are announced/available.

damn that higher end 5d replacement sounds unbelieveable. i know what i'm going to save my pennies towards

but if they're selling 16mp/5fps for $3000-$3500, what crazy upgrades are going to be on the next 1Ds?

The mind boggles.

Rex, this is probably the most believable rumour around. It makes a lot of sense and will be given more weight next week when a revised 1D-series camera ISN'T released.

Rex...do you happen to know if the camera in the "low-end" 5D line will have an on-board flash? Thanks!

Choices Choices.... At what price point does it make sense to buy a 30D in October rather than picking up a S3 to use until the 30D replacement comes out in the spring? And if so, should I still buy all the glass in October when it goes on sale?

10 mpx I assume? How much extra are those new features worth and would one be sorry not to have this camera come springtime v. enjoying the cost savings of a 30D?

The Problem is that there will ALWAYS be a better model comming out. Spend the money now, get something you will enjoy using and enjoy it for 5+ years when you can buy a replacement. The argument/question of why not buy an S3 now...will last forever, because a replacement for the 40D? will be right around the corner when the 40D? comes out...
All of the canon cameras out right now offer great noise performance and some nice features. Sure, More MP, better AF, New Processor and "Anti-Dust" are great features that are very desireable but none are necessities...
Get what you need now and in a few years upgrade to the new...

The upside I saw to the S3 included having a small light camera for times when I don't want to lug a DSLR with me. I know I'm not as likely to buy one after dropping the big $$$ on a DSLR.

The Ultrazooms seems like bad DSLRs too me. If I were buying an interm camera, I'd get an ultra compact, or compact. This way I would be able to slip it in my pocket for those occasions when carting around the DSLR would be a nuisance.

In that vein, I'd look at one of the small fujis that give decent high ISO performance. This "convienence" camera could take the place of a mediocre all purpose lens, say a tamron 18-200. The DSLR could be devoted to high quality, no compromise glass.

If someone gives me a winning Lotto ticket, I'm getting a 17-55 f/2.8 IS, and one of the 70-200 IS L's. The fuji f30? or even the old f10 would be in my pocket for emergency use...

Until then, I read these fora (sp?) and lust after the resources you folks have!

Clyde
