5400 died ! Does yours still work???
I went to use my CoolPix 5400 last week and all it would display on screen was the exposure data and an otherwise black screen as if the lens cap was on.
The camera is in otherwise great shape, has never been dropped or wet and took great pics just a few days prior to it's death. I tried a couple of obvious/desperate things like swapping the memory card for a different one and also changing the battery. No luck, still a black image on the LCD though I could view images on a memory card that I had taken previously.
I did a bit of searching on the net and found that there is a Nikon service bulletin regarding these symptoms for the 3100, 5700 and a couple other models but not the 5400. Nikon will fix those cameras free regardless of warranty status because they had received a bad batch of CCDs from Sony.
I find it particularly ironic that my CP 950 and Epson 850Z that this camera was supposed to "replace" are both still working fine even though they are at least 3 years older than the 5400.
The camera is only 6 months out of warranty and Nikon wants $150 to fix it. Has anyone else with a 5400 had the CCD die on them? What did Nikon do about it.
