Question about P1 AP mode

I have a a Coolpix 7900. Great wee camera, but the lack of Aperture Priority mode is now a problem. I take a lot of macro shots of watches and I used to use a canon G2. It was great but I gave it to my daughter and bought the 7900 really without thinking. It does a great job with macro but I'm finding I need the ability to get some shots with a much greater depth of field. I like the size and weight of the 7900 so the P1 seems to be a perfect alternative. I have read several reviews of it but there isn't much info on the AP mode and one review even said it didn't do much. So my question is; will the AP mode work with the macro and can different aperatures be set or is it some kind of semi auto mode which offers little control.
