Unhappy Jittery Autofocus (Squeaking/Chirping)

I have a D70 with kit lens. Just a couple days ago the autofocus made squeaking/chirping noises and (near) instantly went to different focus points. It kept jumping back and forth between extremes really fast but never hitting the right focus.

I stopped messing with my camera for a bit and then it was fine the next time I used it. But the problem returned after that. And now it seems okay again.

Any ideas what the problem with the camera is? Anybody experience something similar? Any idea on the cost to repair?

Also, I don't have any other lenses to test or friends with lenses. My warranty runs out soon so I need to decide quickly whether I should go ahead and ship my baby home from Korea or risk the repair fees in Korea.

Thanks
