Default Questions on the Nikor 18-200 VR lens

Would this lens be fast enough for fast action shots (for example a baseball pitcher mid motion in a pitch, or even a bird in flight). It is a VR lens so they claim you can get results as if you are using 4 shutter-speed stops faster than what it is acutlaly shot at but I am still a little skeptical in regards to it. I am considering this as my only lens, or part of a one of 2 lens pack for my normal shooting. I will either get this one lens, or 2 sigma lenses covering the same ranges.

Thanks,
BEATNUT

Not really sure why this has happend, but lately there are a LOT of questions about Nikon DSLRs and DSLR lenses posted in this Nikon digital "compact" camera forum.

The right forum to post this question is in the Nikon Digital SLR forum, one forum down on the main forum page.

I posted to some the same thing Cold,

I would think that you want as many to see your posts as possible, so you could get op's opinions from DSLR users.

VR does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING for action shots. VR allows you to hand hold shots at much slower shutter speeds than you would without VR and the same specifications, but it does nothing except make the situation worse if your subject moves.

On a bright day for outdoor sports, maybe you would be OK. Indoors or night sports, not a chance (unless you are carrying a nuclear powered flash ) You want difficult light action shots, you need fast glass, not glass that compensates for your shaky hands.

don't have one yet but perhaps the 70-200G f/2.8 VR would be more attuned for "fast action shots" than the 18-200 f/3.5-5.6 is. then perhaps couple that with the 17-55 f/2.8. pricey tho.
if sigma... try the 17-70 and the 70-200 or 70-300.
