Travelling to Italy - what to do about rechargeable battery on SD500?
Newbie to this forum, but looking forward to your help
So I bought the SD500 Canon for a 3 week trip to Italy, its size and mps a factor in the decision. (This is before I knew about so many people having trouble with a cracked LCD). Anyway, I have a rechargeable battery and want to know what I need beside a plug converter to recharge in Italy. Does it require some kind of voltage converter too?
My son has an sd110 with a charger which came with the camera and on the charger it has a switch to change the current so it can work in US and Europe, he used it this summer and it charged fine in Europe. Check the side of the charger, maybe yours has a switch too.
Some electronics operate on universal voltage and may be used worldwide. I don't know about your Canon battery charger, but you can purchase a charge converter kit that comes with extra plugs and it will do the job in Italy. I lived in Rome for three years and used one I purchased at Sears.
Don't worry if there isn't a switch on the charger. Find the "blurp" of text on the charger (probably on the back/underside).
If it says something like: 100-240V~50/60Hz it will (probably) change it settings on its own. The picture below is of my charger, just look for something similar to the second line from the top.
If you aren't sure about your charger, just post a picture of the text on the it and someone will be able to tell you.

You may think I'm nuts, but I bought two extra batteries for my SD500 and I've actually needed them...although I was away from civilization both times... And, in Arizona last week, I actually filled a 2GB card on the SD500...even with carrying TWO cameras (my S2 as well)! Now I think need to hire part-time help to assist with cataloging all the shots!
You're my kinda photographer JTL! I have a 1 GB and a 512 and my husband thinks it will be plenty for a 3 week trip. I say I need another 1 GB.
Hey, I heard a blurb on the news or radio or something about a website where you can download (and thereby empty) your SD cards and then retrieve them when you get home. Anybody have a clue about this website, what it's called, and how it works?
Well, you could just set up an e-mail account at Yahoo! and e-mail them to that account. I believe you get 1 GB for free at Yahoo! and there are probably others where you can do the same.
I have a friend who took a trip to Italy recently. He had a 512MB flash card and a 3 MP camera and when he filled his card he would take it a local photo shoppe and have the images transferred to CD. He did this for about €6 (6 euros). They did it on the spot and it took no time. This eliminated the need for more flash cards or a laptop to transfer images. Just a thought.

The adapter can be purchased from Fry's for $3 or for more at Radio Shack stores.
I will be taking a 20gig image tank along as I have done on other trips. Other members of the group can store their files which I will merge and organize. They will then be posted on my panoramabob.com photo site for all to see. I take the best and most interesting to make a rather complex multimedia show that I send out to the group. Searching for the right music and integrating hundreds of images and video clips is the hard part.
My work horse camera is a Canon A300. It is low in looks and sex appeal but always comes up with a good shot except when a stronger flash is necessary. I'm testing a SD400. It is fun but the old camera usually takes the better picture. I may buy a Sony or Hp tomorrow for some more options. I might go for the new S80 but time is running out......
