how do you use the light metering button on the cannon powershot s500?!?!

hi,

i just bought a new powershot s500 and the light metering button isnt working
(it works as a up button) but it doesnt do anything when im in manual mode(the instructions say it has to be in manual to use it)do you know whats the problem or how to use it?!?
Can someone pleeeeeeeeeeeese answer?thanks
