Well, I would be surprised if it's now a widespread problem, but the 18-200 did have a problem that was exactly as he described. Turned out to be a bad firmware chip, which, once replaced, solved the problem forever. My copy had the problem, but it was supposedly only associated with an early production run. It has worked fine since, but then I haven't used it a great deal since I got better lenses. I really should sell the lens.
Now, as to all that other stuff...meh. Have no idea what he's talking about.
