I just bought (and returned) an 80-200/2.8 Nikon AF-D from KEH. Great lens, but had some backfocus. Appreciate the 14 day return policy for buying used camera gear.
But on the topic of KEH, here's something you might do.
1. Sell your D40. Pick up a used D50. I've seen some going for $200-250 on Ebay and Craigslist in good shape. The D40 should bring at least $200 for the body. Call that a wash.
2. Get a used Nikon 80-200/2.8 AF (the one ring version). Not the fastest autofocus in the world, but it should be usable for hockey shots with the f2.8 aperture.
Thx for the info Sam. I've actually got a D60, so I wouldn't want to take the step back in resolution (I have _occasionally_ needed the extra), but I have been seriously thinking about a D80 or even a D90. I see D80s selling pretty reasonable these days, and could use the extra focus points.
OTOH I was planning on buying a 24-70 and 70-200 next spring anyway, so maybe I'll just bite the bullet and do the Nikon 70-200 right now and be done with it.
Thanks everyone for the input. Very much appreciated.

Rich is looking to offload one (70-200VR) for $1500. That's a pretty decent price considering the lens is $1950US new.
So I was snooping around eBay yesterday and put in a last second bid on a used Sigma 70-200 HSM that the seller says is like new. Blew my budget by a hundred bucks (paid $595 Canuck bucks), but, like I told the wife, how can you put a price on the memories?
Oddly enough, she could.
Actually I think she was just happy that I hadn't dropped the money on the Nikon. Now can someone tell me why freight doesn't move on Sunday?

Or how about the Sigma 150mm Macro HSM? Its a decent macro lens I know, but how about when used for distance shots? Anyone know if this has the same focus limitations as my old Sigma 50mm macro lens? ie: it won't focus much past 20 feet or so.
Sorry for coming inn a bit late: I have the 150 f2.8 macro and its autofocus is slooooooooow, so forget about it.

I hear that is pretty common for Micro lenses due to their huge focal path/sweep. Have to used the focus limiter switch? It should make focus hunting a bit quicker.
