nqjudo, it was my 60mm macro, on manual focus, ISO 400, f/6.3, ss1/40. I was focused at 1:1 and moved the camera to try and focus on the eyes. Framing wise I didn't have a lot of choice as the critter was on a glass door. Tips appreciated.
First let me say that the shot is not bad at all. The lack of sharpness is almost undoubtedly due to the 1/40ss while @ 1:1. At that magnification any camera movement is a potential blurr fest. I would try increasing the ss be it through higher ISO or the introduction of flash.

I second that, the atmosphere in the second shot is spooky. How did you keep the trees so sharp, it must have been windy to push the clouds past and make them appear to be moving?

It was calm at the ground but the wind was moving higher up.
I vote you do more of them and develop the effect more. (Sharp trees with blurred clouds, well the interesting part to me is the blurred clouds with a sharp foreground, doesn't have to be trees i guess, hmm im getting some ideas i might try out myself... Where do i send your royalty cookies to?)
Nothing special about this shot, except that it's ISO 6400 from my 7D (arrived yesterday!). Standard NR was on in this shot, with 5 levels of luminance NR and 10 chroma in DPP. I know, FF users are like "And?" but I'm impressed and it's got me giddy.

I bought a new camera. It's very advanced - you don't even need it. ~Steven Wright

Try exposing it a 1/3rd or 2/3rds brighter, and you might get even less noise. I've found mine is smoother exposed brighter.
