I couldn't decide where this question belongs, thus the reason it's here. It looks like I'll be in Atlanta next Friday night before I head on to Birmingham. Does anyone know a place that overlooks downtown Atlanta that I can take some pics at night? Night shots are a huge weakness of mine and I need the practice. Thank you!

I live there and often ask myself the same question, but I really haven't looked too hard. There are some good views from the south and east sides in relatively close to town. However, I am not certain that they would be in the best areas to stand with a tripod and expensive camera at night. From that general side you might find some that get the capitol building in them. There are a lot of shots taken from a few of the I75/85 corridor from bridges that would get you some traffic on the highway as it flows in and out of downtown. You might also try getting off at the 17th exit and using that bridge.
Thanks Kgosden, I appreciate it! I think I'll be staying near Pappasitos resturant. My mouth is already watering just thinking about Pappasitos. I'll research those locations and also look for any parking decks, etc in the area. Thanks for the heads up on the type area also. I would love to get a good shot of downtown Atlanta and/or Birmingham just once with all the lights, etc.

Not much of downtown will be visible from I75 & Windy Hill area. I don't drive the I75 corridor much, but I don't recall any decent city views from there until the I85 merge.
Thanks kgosden, I appreciate it. I was researching it last night and came accross something called the "Jackson Street bridge" at least I think that's what it was? However while researching it I noticed the words robbery and mugged describing it and that's not good. I was wondering if this was close to where you had told me about?
That would be from the last overpass above Freedom Parkway. Definitely not the best part of town, but not the absolute worst. I would suggest trying the 3-4 bridges from North Ave up to 17th St that cross I75-I85 on the northern side of downtown. I found this shot from the North Ave. bridge. http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=37834. You might be able to get a good shot of the Varsity as well.
Thanks much! All I have to do is convinvce my traveling companions to make a stop here or there to take some pics and I'll be in business. I'm very familiar with the Varsity as I usually eat there on the way back through Atlanta headed home.

I had one night and one night only to spend in Atlanta and I did. Course as my luck would have it, it rained all night and was very foggy. However I did manage some night shots of Birmingham, Alabama. Here's one that has a plane as a bonus. Shooting at night is a lot harder than people realize, at least for me. I shot this one in RAW with a 20 second exposure at F10 and an ISO of 100. I'm happy with this one as I'm just starting night shots, but I have a LONG way to go........
