New GE E1040

The new GE E1040 is pretty great. 10.1 mp, 4X optical zoom and a beautiful 3 inch LCD. The camera is very easy to use and lives up to it's promises.

There are however some downfalls. The casing is made mostly of plastic and it didn't come with a DC adapter. I'm very afraid of what will happen if I accidentally drop it.

Aside from that it's very stylish, modern and lightweight. It could easily fit into your back pocket.

I intentionally left the camera fully on LCD and all for 2 hours before the battery died. It takes about an hour to fully recharge. I recommend buying this if the price is right. It's definately worth $300.

Despite the great reviews, I could never bring myself to buy a camera from a company that also makes stoves and washer/dryers. It may be a great camera but it's a quirk I have. Anyone else share these feelings of mine?

GE is involved in much more than stoves and Washer/dryers ---
They are involved in aviation, healthcare, and many other areas...

Some of their healthcare include:
Magnetic Resonance guided Focused Ultrasound
X-rays
Molecular Imaging
GE Medical merged with Amersham to create GE Healthcare....
Consumer Electronics includes computer accessories, digital cameras, and telephones.
WRBG was a GE television station in 1940...and hooked up with WNBC in NY.

Old name companies of past, are not just the simple companies that they started out as -- merger mania makes for mega corps with lots of different products.

That said, the only review I saw for a GE digital camera, was not glowing. Even with a good product, they will have to fight the pre-conceived notions as stated above of being the producer of kitchen appliances and phones.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy from GE, but at this time, they're cameras aren't quite ready.

GE is the second largest company in the world and currently valued at $49 billion dollars. They're also HUGE in the avionics industry, and produce more aircraft jet engines than any other jet engine company worldwide. The fact that their logo appears on stoves and washers is really immaterial with regard to their (third-party) camera production.

Think about Panasonic for example, and their top-rated and top-selling digital cameras — their badging appears on toasters, frying pans, and hair dryers!

But I do agree — we need a bit more time to form an accurate verdict about GE's digital camera performance and quality control in the longer term. Just like Panasonic and their apprenticeship into the digital camera market nearly a decade ago.

I like this GE product too, it worth its price, GE is one large company, I trust it.
